Emily Post's Etiquette 18th edition-Review

Here is the goodreads description:

Earlier in this century people turned to Emily Post for etiquette advice about the way they lived in the rapidly changing age known as the Roaring Twenties. As we prepare to enter a new millennium people continue to turn to Emily Post for advice on etiquette and manners. While etiquette remains a code of behavior based on kindness, consideration and unselfishness that does not change, our manners, the practice of etiquette, must change as our world changes. The world of today is both vasdy different and astonishingly the same as the world Emily Post herself knew. Seventy-five years after Emily Post wrote her groundbreaking book, Peggy Post, her great-grand-daughter-in-law, has thoroughly revised and updated Emily Post's Etiquette to take us into the next century. The hallmarks that define Emily Post's Etiquette as an indispensable resource remain: the correct table-setting for an intimate dinner party of eight, the proper response to a formal third-person invitation, and of course, all the details of planning a wedding. But in a world where our neighbors and coworkers are as likely to come from the other side of the globe as the other side of town, changes both subde and radical are necessary in our manners. In addition to a chapter devoted to doing business internationally, readers find not only advice for visiting those from other cultures living in our country, but also guidance on wearing ethnic clothing when traveling in other countries. Previous editions have explained the traditions of Christianity and Judaism but now for the first time readers learn about birth and death ceremonies of Buddhism, Islam and Hinduism. Sports participants who used toread only about the etiquette of golf, tennis, skiing and sailing, now learn about in-line skating and snowboarding as well. Emily Post's Etiquette, is not just for your grandmothers generation. It's for all of us.

In my opinion, no one uses manners anymore.  It is quite sad actually.  I try to get my friends to use manners.  I tell boys they should take off their hats in restaurants, one refuses (I think it is because he is going bald).  Others I tell it is rude to text and use their cell phones at dinner in a restaurant yet they do it anyways, because they aren't on a date they say.  People use cell phone while dealing with a cashier.  I can't even get guys to put the toilet seat down in my own house! They say "why should men have to do it and not women"? Ugghhhhh  There is just no winning with trying to get others to use manners.   Men I know just burp and fart like it is normal and when I tell them it is nasty they claim it is unhealthy to keep it in.

I hadn't heard about this book till I starting following Lauren Conrad's blog.  And she has a section on manners and mentioned this book.  Surprisingly I hadn't heard of it before.
The book has basic manners, like when to write a thank-you note, which fork to use, how to act at various religious ceremonies, what to wear to a semi-formal wedding in November (for example), the "who pays?" date dilemma, how to handle a party guest who stays too long, and how much to tip for various services (hotel room-service, wine stewards, pool cleaners, etc.).

And the book has new manners:
-Does the man or woman go first through a revolving door? (If it's already moving, the woman; if it's not, the man goes through first to get the heavy door going.)

-What DOES "business casual" actually mean? (Men and women: khakis or slacks, open-colllar shirt, etc.)

-How fast do you have to respond to e-mail? (One to two days for personal e-mails; within 24 hours for business)

-What's the rule on how much an engagement ring should cost? (Traditionally, two months of the groom's salary. More modern grooms should spend as much as they can afford without going too much into debt. And negotiating on the price with a jeweler is acceptable practice.)
-

there's even a section about text-message etiquette.

Please get this book... and get it for everyone you know.  Manners just aren't in practice anymore.

I have come back to edit this post. I don't not mean to say that I have the perfect manners. I swear too much. I don't always act like a lady... though that could be because I don't have many lady friends. Most of my friends are guys.

Time to vote for our monthly book club pick... be sure to stop by the group!

Supernaturally by Kierten White-Review

I read this book because I enjoyed the first book Paranormalcy which I read for my YA Book Club.  The second book is just as good!  Here is the goodreads description:

Evie finally has the normal life she’s always longed for. But she’s shocked to discover that being ordinary can be . . . kind of boring. Just when Evie starts to long for her days at the International Paranormal Containment Agency, she’s given a chance to work for them again. Desperate for a break from all the normalcy, she agrees. But as one disastrous mission leads to another, Evie starts to wonder if she made the right choice. And when Evie’s faerie ex-boyfriend Reth appears with devastating revelations about her past, she discovers that there’s a battle brewing between the faerie courts that could throw the whole supernatural world into chaos. The prize in question? Evie herself. So much for normal.

I love the new characters in this book and the old ones as well. Some great new paranormals. There is still the great humor in the book... for example when Evie is always saying "bleep" instead of a curse word! That is fun! I like that Evie is trying to be on her own and grown-up. I had a few problems with some of the things that happens with the fair world... for example she enters it but for like 5 minutes and then leaves and nothing but a ship bombing happens. I do like that that Evie is moving on to college.  I thought it was great though and a fast beach type read.

39 Clues Series: A King's Ransom -Review

I just love this little series.  Each book is a fast quick read but I have really grown to love the characters!
Here is the goodreads description:

Amy and Dan are in a race for their lives . . . and the enemy may be even closer than they think. When seven members of their family were kidnapped by a sinister organization known as the Vespers, thirteen-year-old Dan Cahill and his older sister, Amy, vowed they'd stop at nothing to bring the hostages home. But then the ransom comes in and the Vespers demand the impossible. Amy and Dan have just days to track down and steal an ancient map. The only catch? No one has seen the map for half a century. Now Amy and Dan are on a desperate search that will lead them to the Nazis, spies, a mad king and some of history's dirtiest secrets. It's the race of their lives . . . and one misstep will mean certain death for the hostages.

Another good book in the 30 clue series. I am still glad I picked up these books and started reading them! This one continues the Vespers plot! I looked it up and there is only going to be 6 books in the Cahills VS Vespers. More family secrets revealed! I love how the plot is thickening!  I love the mystery of who V-1 is?

For those of you looking for adventure, mystery, humor, amazing race style book this is for you.  Now we are on the hunt for artifacts and even learning history along the way.

Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins review

I read this book for my Young Adult Book Club here is the goodreads description:
Anna is looking forward to her senior year in Atlanta, where she has a great job, a loyal best friend, and a crush on the verge of becoming more. Which is why she is less than thrilled about being shipped off to boarding school in Paris - until she meets Etienne St. Clair: perfect, Parisian (and English and American, which makes for a swoon-worthy accent), and utterly irresistible. The only problem is that he's taken, and Anna might be, too, if anything comes of her almost-relationship back home. As winter melts into spring, will a year of romantic near - misses end with the French kiss Anna - and readers - have long awaited?

I loved this book! So cute and romantic. Anna the main character really seems like a real person.  I love that the book takes place in Paris.  I hate to fly so I like to read books about places I will never go!  I am totally interested in reading Perkin's other two books.

The romance in this book is spot on to young adults.  I had a boyfriend or a friend just like Etienne in high school.  He was with me but he wasn't. He had a girl friend in another school.  And so I never knew what was going on with them just like Anna and Etienne.  Anna is a great female protagonist in the novel.  No she doesn't save the world.  But she is an average teenager dating for the first time, getting drunk for the first time, fighting with friends, and going to high school.

In the book the characters keep meeting at Point Zero in France and I want to go there soooo badly!

Go pick this book up now!!

Avatar The Last Airbender: The Lost Adventures Review

I love love the Avatar cartoon (not the movie..yuck).  So when I saw that NetGalley  had the graphic novel I had to get it. Here is the goodreads description:

One of America's hottest shows returns! For three years, millions of eager fans tuned in each week to watch Nickelodeon's hit animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Ever since, fans have been hungry for more - and now their wait is finally over! This volume collects the long-out-of-print, fan-favorite comics previously published in Nickelodeon Magazine and with the Airbender DVDs, plus over 70 brand-new comics pages. That's over 26 stories set in Airbender continuity, by a host of top-notch talent, many of whom worked on the original animated series itself.
This is the first time I have read a graphic novel for my Nook. I liked it.. but I'll admit, it was hard to read. The lettering was very tiny. I think it is because it was a NetGalley so it came through as a PDF so I couldn't zoom in or anything. But I loved the stories. If you are a fan of Avatar then you will love this graphic novel!! Aang is into all kinds of new adventures not seen on the show. I took a few pictures...

Here is an example of the small writing.. I zoomed in on the screen:

The stories were great... but since the writing was tiny I gave the graphic novel 4 cats!  Can't wait for the new season of Avatar! For those of you who haven't seen the trailer here it is, the new season is called The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra
