This week I received a couple of graphic novels. These are the Twilight graphic novel volume 2, and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies graphic novel. I also received a fun book called the Zombie Handbook. And two novels, one for my YA Book Club's November read Ask. And then I picked up a book while babysitting my cousin last week 1984. I ended up borrowing that book from my aunt because I finished the book I brought to read and needed something to read. I have always wanted to read it so it was perfect!!
I just finished reading the second book in the Flapper series, Ingenue. Here is the goodreads description:
Power . . . love . . . scandal . . . There’s never enough to go around. In the city that never sleeps, Lorraine Dyer is wide awake. Ever since she exposed Clara Knowles for the tramp she was—and lost her closest confidante in the process—Lorraine has spent every second scheming to make her selfish, lovesick ex–best friend pay for what she did. No one crosses Lorraine. Not even Gloria. True love conquers everything—or so Gloria Carmody crazily believed. She and Jerome Johnson can barely scrape together cash for their rent, let alone have a moment to whisper sweet nothings in the dark. And if they thought escaping Chicago meant they’d get away with murder . . . they were dead wrong. Clara was sure that once handsome, charming Marcus Eastman discovered her shameful secret, he’d drop her like a bad habit. Instead, he swept her off her feet and whisked her away to New York. Being with Marcus is a breath of fresh air—and a chance for Clara to leave her wild flapper ways firmly in the past. Except the dazzling parties and bright lights won’t stop whispering her name. . . . INGENUE is the second novel in the sexy, dangerous, and ridiculously romantic Flappers series set in the Roaring Twenties . . . where revenge is a dish best served cold.
I really enjoy this series. I read the second one because the first one, Vixen, I read for my YA Book Club and enjoyed it so I wanted to continue the series. I know it's not as popular as the Bright Young Things books but it should be. The characters are so fun and I love the whole interracial relationship in the book. I can't imagine going through this in the 1920s. In fact, I think the book might make it a little more light since it is YA then it really would be.
This book changes characters in each paragraph and that makes this book more interesting! Each person's story takes place in a totally different area finally meeting up in the end. And the ride is fabulous!Flappers, speakeasies, prohibition, gangsters, jazz, an interracial relationship and murder all jump from the pages of "Ingenue". This young adult book transports the reader back to a time when life was exciting and dangerous and where interracial relationships were forbidden.
I can't wait for the next book Diva to come out in 2012. The Flapper Series has a great website so be sure to check it out!!
I read this book for my YA Book Club. Here is the goodreads description:
Once upon a time, I was a little girl who disappeared. Once upon a time, my name was not Alice. Once upon a time, I didn’t know how lucky I was. When Alice was ten, Ray took her away from her family, her friends her life. She learned to give up all power, to endure all pain. She waited for the nightmare to be over. Now Alice is fifteen and Ray still has her, but he speaks more and more of her death. He does not know it is what she longs for. She does not know he has something more terrifying than death in mind for her. This is Alice’s story. It is one you have never heard, and one you will never, ever forget.
WOW! This book is crazy! First off it is very short. I read in about 2 hours. I hadn't heard of it before until my book club picked it for this month's book of the month. This book is about a girl who is abducted in the 5th grade and is forced to live with a man for 5 years. He has done it before and threatens that if she leave or do anything he will hurt her family. I will say that it was a good book, but I don't know why anyone wants to read this. It is sooo depressing. The worst part is this really happens to people. Here is an article form one case:
Another big story is of Elizabeth Smart. That case was horrible as well. I lived in Salt Lake at the time and it was always on the news. I still can't believe that girl was taken right out of her room. Now there is a girl who turned her life around and is a wonderful woman now. I guess this just goes to show that you can go back to normal society after all the mental and sexual abuse. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_S...
Here is a great video on her turning her life around
This book will disturb me for a long time.... I am not really sure if it should be classified as young adult.
Just finished a great classic! Here is the goodreads description:
Elizabeth Bennet is the perfect Austen heroine: intelligent, generous, sensible, incapable of jealousy or any other major sin. That makes her sound like an insufferable goody-goody, but the truth is she's a completely hip character, who if provoked is not above skewering her antagonist with a piece of her exceptionally sharp -- but always polite -- 18th century wit. The point is, you spend the whole book absolutely fixated on the critical question: will Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy hook up?
Kind of a funny description of a book published in 1813! Sometimes I just need some old fashioned writing in my life. When just simple love stories happened. SOMETIMES I have no idea what the characters are saying and have to go back and re-read the paragraph but in a book like this I really don't mind. Austen's writing is not for everyone but I sure do like to read it. I will admit it took about 100 pages to really get into the book and characters but once I did it was great. I am going to now watch the movies so that maybe I can understand the books even more. I did want to MAKE Mr Darcy and Lizzy just get together and talk things out. So much was done by hearsay that I just wanted to choke people out! Someday I will read Pride Prejudice and Zombies. I actually considered reading it instead of this book because I hear it is the exact same writing as Austen's just with Zombies added in. But then I thought maybe I should read it the first time the way it's supposed to be read and then later go back and read it with Zombies included!
I have now read 4 of Austen's 6 novels. I still have to read Emma and Persuasion. I can't wait to dig into them... after I dig back into my TBR pile.
This is the day of the week where we get to know each other better by answering a question devised by our lovely hostesses Parajunkee & Alisoncanread. We also gain new followers by joining each other's sites via GFC, so please let me know if you're a new follower since I automatically follow back. And now for this week's question....
Q: What superhero is your alter-ego?
Wow! What a good question for me!! I love comics and superheros, but never thought of who I am. I guess I have always related the most with Wonder Woman. I have always loved her. I suppose I like her because of her greek mythology background, her attraction to batman, and her pimp outfit. I have always loved anything with her in it. In fact I was excited about the new show that was supposed to come out staring Wonder Woman but apparently it sucked so it never was released. Also I love that DC is re-releasing the comics (in digital form too) and Wonder Woman get a revamp too! You can see the new 52 here DC The New 52 comics
Now for the Blog Hop over at Crazy for Books “What is your favorite type of candy?” Well my favorite kind of candy is... snickers. Man do I love Snickers! But sometimes I like candy that is a little more fruity thats when I have to eat a Starburst!
